What is Sigma? - In 1922, six nurses founded Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, today known as Sigma, at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, which is now the Indiana University School of Nursing, in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. The founders chose the name from the Greek words storgé, thárros, and timé, meaning love, courage, and honor. Sigma became incorporated in 1985 and is a nonprofit organization with a 501(c)(3) tax status in the United States. Learn more about the organization at www.SigmaNursing.org

Membership
-Membership is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and to nurse leaders who exhibit exceptional achievements in nursing. Sigma has more than 135,000 active members residing in more than 100 countries! There are roughly 540 chapters at more than 700 institutions of higher education and practice settings throughout the world. Xi-Kappa At Large is dedicated to providing a rewarding and unique professional development experience through Sigma membership.

Chapter News

  • University of Jamestown

    The University of Jamestown recently hosted Jami Falk MS, RN-BSN, CNML who spoke about her VA career. Jami works as a primary care monitoring and oversight chief nurse for the Office of Primary Care in Washington, D.C. Jami also shared advice for nursing students and congratulated the 2023-2024 Sigma inductees

  • Project Ignite Light

    University of Jamestown Sigma nursing honor society provided a service project for Project Ignite Light which aims to provide children with essential personal items when they are examined by their local Child Advocacy Center or entering foster care because of physical and sexual abuse, neglect, and human trafficking. These items include age/gender-appropriate pajamas, undergarments, a fleece blanket, a flashlight, a book, shampoo, and a toothbrush set. If you would like to assist with this service project, there are several options available to you (1) purchase items online for delivery to 10881 20M St SE, Rogers, ND 58479, (2) purchase items and drop off in boxes at the Orlady or Nafus location, or (3) send money directly to https://ignitelight.org/

  • Fall 2023 Educational Event

    Thank you to everyone who attended the fall educational event on December 14th, 2023 on Gender Affirming Care and the Professional Nurse by Abigail Brunsvold, DNP, APRN, CPNP-AC/PC.

  • Xi Kappa Member Jill Holmstrom is selected to present at the 2023 Sigma Convention

    Jill Holmstrom has been selected for an oral presentation at the 2023 Sigma Biennial Convention. Jill will present with other members of the Sigma family on "The Status of Nursing Education Research in RN-BSN Programs: What does the evidence tell us?” Presenters include: Cynthia Brown (Theta Xi), Brenda Elliott (Lambda Kappa & Eta Beta), Christy Gipson (Iota Nu), Jill Holmstrom (Xi Kappa), and Devita Stallings (Delta lambda)
